Nottingham, 22nd April 2025 — A new state-of-the-art electric vehicle (EV) charging hub has opened at the Nottingham Hockey Centre as part of a strategic partnership between the Hockey Centre and IONITY, the leading European charging network.

Powered exclusively by 100% renewable energy from wind, solar, and hydroelectric sources, the site will offer 12 charging points to local residents, allowing them to charge their vehicles from 10% to 80% in under 15 minutes.

While there, the new hub offers a wide range of amenities to local users including the centre’s Griff Coffee Kiosk; the Beehive Hockey Store; and a new InPost locker system. The hub also offers access to a peaceful orchard picnic area, with a marquee and patio for families and visitors to swap the charging park for peaceful natural surroundings.

The initiative aligns with IONITY’s broader plan to triple its number of publicly available charging stations in the UK by the end of 2025, as well as Transport Nottingham’s goal to make the city carbon neutral by 2028.

David Griffiths, Director of Nottingham Hockey Centre, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership. “As a community hub, we need to lay long-term foundations to welcome and support the people of Nottingham, as well as visitors from further afield. Partnership with IONITY will attract more visitors both for and beyond hockey, whether it’s enjoying a coffee, collecting parcels, or relaxing in the picnic area. We’re growing with the future of Nottingham in mind, and this initiative helps us do that in a sustainable and financially sensible way.”

Andreas Atkins, Country Manager UK & Ireland at IONITY, also highlighted the importance of expanding the charging network. “The UK has enjoyed one of the most successful rollouts of EV infrastructure in Europe over the last few years, in no small part thanks to forward-thinkers like Nottingham Hockey Centre. Through partnerships like this that expand our ultra-rapid charging network, we can make long-distance EV travel more accessible, convenient, and reliable for all drivers—whether they are visiting the hockey centre or just recharging in the area.

“The opening of this new charging hub is expected to drive further growth in the adoption of electric vehicles, making it easier for drivers to embrace greener, more sustainable transportation options.”
